While some of the starters looked encouraging in spring training, I'm still not sold. The unfortunate fact is that I see this team winning 65 games this year.

The whole thing is the injury issue. They have a new training regimen and a new staff and they got through spring training pretty much intact.I agree with your number but if they stay healthy , they could surprise.NL East is pretty weak other than the Nats, so if the Mets overperform, they have a shot at the playoffs.

I think the NL East divides into three segments: The Nats who barring a disaster should win 90-plus games and the division.  The Marlins who will be lucky to win 58 games and are a lock for last. And the Mets, Phillies and Braves who fall somewhere in the middle with outcomes being determined by how healthy they stay, and in some cases how well some younger players step up.  Right now, assuming largely healthy rosters here would be my forecast:

1. Nats 93 wins
2. Mets 84 wins
3. Phillies 82 wins
4. Braves 76 wins
5. Marlins 56 wins

For real future stocks, I'd say going beyond this year the Phillies have the fastest rising stock in the division and the Nationals will soon have the fastest falling stock.

So what say you now, after a great game today? a little chilly out at Citifield, but a fun win. Great small ball game, did most things right, Noah looked great. The new trainers and strength coaches got the biggest cheers aside from the starters during intros! Yes, it is one game, but after listening to Mickey and the players, they will go far this season. On a sad note, the loss of Rusty Staub today.

Glad you got to see a good opener today and that the weather held out! And yes sad news about Rusty Staub today. RIP Le Grand Orange.

Nice way to start off , a win over a great ballclub! It is sad about "Le Grande Orange" Rusty Staub. He was a NY Met icon and way too young to go at 74.The whole key is staying healthy.Aside from the Nats, the rest of the division is weak, so a wild card win could happen.

2018 Mets Season Empty Re: 2018 Mets Season

Post by Math23x7 Tue Apr 03, 2018 10:30 pm

While the Mets won, I have to say it's unfortunate that in today's game, the starting pitcher gets pulled after two times through the lineup. Remember when starters would consistently go seven plus innings? Of course, Doc can tell you how frequent complete games were in his day. That ship has sailed. Also, we saw a typical Mets ninth inning where Familia comes close to blowing the game.

Also, tomorrow's game (weather permitting) will not be on TV. It will be streamed on facebook, the first of 25 MLB games this year. Since it's the first one, you know there will be some technical difficulties. Either internet traffic will be overwhelming or people at work discover that their Employer blocks facebook in the office. So Noah Syndergaard will pitch a perfect game, but no one outside of Citi Field will be able to see it. Also, that game will blow his arm out and end his season because of all the pitches he will throw...

Mikey, Matt had already thrown 86 pitches and it's a cold rainy night. Callaway made the right call, having him leave with good stats helps Harvey's confidence, and I think it's brilliant that a new pitcher comes in for the third time through the lineup, keeps the batters off balance. If it was July and a nice warm night, he would have stayed in. We are in for a fun ride, so far, the starters look good, although Matz needs some work. LGM!

Thrilling Mets win! They are now 7-1 in this young season.

Now comes a trap series. They are playing in Miami against a team they I believe will be in last place this year. The problem is, in the Marlins bad years, the Mets seem to be the only team they can beat...

That facebook crap was bull___t in my opinion! My 97 year old Mom loves to watch the Mets game in their entirety and she missed out on this one.I did too as I was there caring for her.Facebook can kiss my old white arse! Was never on it nor ever will be.

Yep, back in the early 60's, relief pitchers were few and far between, and complete games by a pitcher were the norm. Now we have 6,7,8 and 9th inning guys,LOL.God help the manager that does not follow the "modern" methods and blows a game.

Anyhoo, really enjoying this team right now.Great pitching and plenty of power! If they can handle the Nats like this, the rest of the division will be a piece of cake.Way to early, but this early stretch has been a blast.

LGM! They are looking good, I don't worry about starters going only 5 innings just yet, we have awesome middle relief. A win is a win! I am going on Saturday and enjoying the nice weather for a night game!

Janet, unfortunately, I have plans for Saturday.

While we talk about how it's still early for Met pitchers to go deep into the game, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer pitched a two-hit complete game tonight, sparing the Nats bullpen.

Post by Math23x7 Wed Apr 11, 2018 10:08 am

Last year, the Mets started the season 7-3 and people were saying the same things about the Mets then as they are now (i.e. this team is finding ways to win, they won't quit). Then they lost three close games in Miami, lost a close game at home vs Philly the next game and it fell apart from there. Syndergaard, Familia, and Harvey would soon all get hurt.

And think about this: it was Friday, April 14th last year that the Mets 2017 downfall began. Marlins pitcher Jarlin Garcia made his big league debut vs the Mets that night and pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Jarlin Garlin will be the starting pitcher tonight vs the Mets...

Janet, I'm just not going to get cocky at this point. I use the same logic when it comes to snow. Set low expectations, get rewarded at good results.

And once again, the Mets win a game late in the game. 10-1! Let's see if they can keep this up going back home.

D'Arnaud is proving to be fragile and injury prone, not good for a long term catcher. You need a guy back there built like a fireplug, a Johnny Bench type of physique. This opnes the door for that new kid now who looks built for the job.D'Arnaud is a streaky hitter as well.I won't miss him.

Great game seeing Wheeler pitch so well and then the veteran Adrian Gonzalez coming through in the clutch.Great move by Alderson picking him up on the cheap.

Amaing run for the Amazings and it's been a blast seeing this team overperform.Great sign was beating the Nats, the key to the division.
