Re: 2014 Yankees
I have so many problems with this signing and i hope i eat crow over them and he turns out to be advertised as his last year record shows. But.....At 25 yrs old, he has already thrown the same amount of innings as a 30 yr. old. In the playoffs last year he threw 163 pitches in one game and came on in relief the next day and threw two more innings. Here we dont let our starters go more than 110-120 (maybe that's why there are so many TJ surgeries, dont know. Last year his ERA was 1.24, the 4 previous years it was in the 4's (Maybe he knows A-Rod's doctor, who knows). Japan's Major Leagues are the equivalent of our Triple A system, now take him out of that and put him in the AL East, thats a huge step up in competition. Let's just hope he turns into more of a Yu Darvish than a Kei Igawa. For that much money for an unproven guy we could have gotten Garza and whoever to fill out the back of the rotation, 2 guys for the same money this one is going to cost. BTW, how do you think CC feels about making less money than somebody who has never thrown a pitch in the Majors? I really hope and pray that i am wrong and this kid is lights out but there are too many factors involved. How many days til pitchers and catchers?

[quote="Quietace"]Yankees sign Masahiro Tanaka for 7 years 155 million. They can opt out after 4 years.
Personally i think they gave him too much money, though its a good signing to sure up the middle of the rotation. [/quote
22 Million for a middle of the rotation starter???????????]

Re: 2014 Yankees
Whoo hoo! LOL, so 4 yrs 80 something million, i know we can afford it (bye bye 189M tax threshhold), although under the old posting system some of that wouldn't have counted against the luxury tax, but either way, I sure hope this kid pans out and supplants CC as the Ace. But like i said before, this is the AL East and this guy never pitched above the equivalent of our Triple A. As for these scouts that say he has the best splitter that they've ever seen...... they must be on his payroll.

Re: 2014 Yankees
The opt out clause is good, otherwise that's alot of dough and a alot of years for an unproven USA major league baseball pitcher. IMHO.

It's a business. Supply and demand. Basic economics. Yankees had a need, a glaring one, in the starting rotation and this guy, age 25, has the potential to be top of the rotation type of starter. Other teams were also in the "viscinity" of giving out a similar contract. Yankees had to differentiate themselves from those teams, and they did. I've read many reports and I've seen none saying this was a bad deal. This was a great singing. And it also attracts fan, including international ones. Revenues will go up. Ticket sales, YES Network viewing, etc...

Re: 2014 Yankees
A no brainer for Yankees FRank. Other teams spent 400 million this off season on Yankees that went free agent, cano granderson Hughes Logan chamberlain. Etc etc. plus they lost pettite and Mariano to free agency. What are they supposed to do sit on their hands. I like every signing yanks did this offseason, people that talk about the money don't look at both sides.
PS. Thanks for updating your totals. You know how I can be about accuracy.

I'm a Mets fan but also a baseball fan, so I hope you Yankee Fans don't mind me chiming in here.
I think you and Frank are absolutely correct.Other teams are spending very big in the AL, the Yanks competition. This Japanese kid may turn out to be a great pitcher in the AL.At least they have a way out in a few years if he craps out.
McCann and Beltran are great additions. One possible exeception is Beltran's bad knees. If they flare up, watch out.Maybe they will DH him to keep that from happening.
I think you have a better team on paper than last year. What is it, about three weeks to pitchers and catchers reporting.Doesn't seem possible as I look out on the Artic here,LOL!

Re: 2014 Yankees
Yankees sign Andrew Bailey to a minor league deal.
He is recovering from shoulder surgery, but if he does get healthy some point in the season, he could easily add quality depth to the bullpen.
He was fantastic when he was with the A's. Good person to take a gamble on.

Same here Frank, excellent signing. He and Ellsbury will drive pitchers nuts.

Francisco Cervelli will be the backup catcher and Michael Pineda will start Game 5. Looks like a good team this year!

Re: 2014 Yankees
I like this team.
The only big questions are the infield (minus Tex) and the bullpen.
The starting rotation looks exceptional, and even if there are one or two injuries, we have good backups.

Re: 2014 Yankees
Really Teixeira?? Really?? Lands himself on the 15 day DL with a hamstring after the 3rd game of the season after only playing in 15games all of last season. It's this kind of stuff that becomes a chemistry killer as the season progresses. I know it's not his fault and I feel bad for him, but man to have one of your key guys yet again start the in and out of the line up thing is really frustrating. It's early in the season so end rant.

Re: 2014 Yankees
I know its still early to get overly excited about, but Tanaka has been looking outstanding thus far. I knew right from the first start when he gave up a home run from the very first batter he faced, he then pitched his ass off afterwards. A lot of rookies would have been shakened. He showed a lot of poise which is very promising, not to mention 28 k's in three starts. Potential to be a front line starter (ace) if this continues.

Re: 2014 Yankees
Nuno should be a good replacement, but Nova is a big loss. I hope this is our last "big" injury on the season. Especially on the pitching staff.
