Perfect Math!
The high water mark for this season was being one game out of the second wild card.I was suspicious of that since they had beaten up three weak teams to get that far. They have played two strong clubs and have failed miserably.
There are some bright spots, Alonso, Conforto,Rosario, McNeil, De Grom but they need help in a closer and set up guys.Fire the hitting coach after this miserable hitting stretch as well.Don't like the manager, but I would give him another year.
Best we can do now is to be spoilers and I'll be watching for that reason and to see how the young guys do.Alonso has an outside shot at 50 HR's.His 42 are an outstanding feat.

Re: 2019 Mets Season
It sure has been ugly. But the optimist in me says it ain't over til they are mathematically eliminated, which they aren't.... yet. Any of the other teams can implode too, even though it isn't likely. I still have tix for a bunch of games in September, so I hope they at least make it interesting.

Janet, they can be spoilers so that is a reason to go.5 games back in the second wild card? A very long shot at best.By not winning the division you put yourself in bad situations like this one.

Re: 2019 Mets Season
Man I thought this team would do better with some of their moves at the trade deadline. Especially since they held onto Synderguard

I think the bullpen is what really hurt us this season.Diaz and Familia were both failures.Cost a lot of games. Also spotty hittng.

Well, 2 out of 3 in Philly, I'll take it. But Mickey blew it again with leaving pitchers in too long. Familia has to go, or limit him to teams worse than us. He can't pitch against the good teams. I still have tix for 6 more games, hoping they win when I go, or at least make it interesting!

Still 4 away for that second wild card so still alive.Agree with Familia, he has lost it completely.Diaz is not reliable as well.Calloway would have more leeway if the lineup put up 6 or 7 runs a game like good hitting teams do.Now is the time for a 13 out of 15 hot streak like the Nats are doing.

Re: 2019 Mets Season
As somebody who likes to use math/statistics in both baseball and weather, when it comes to crazy events, it needs to be understood that they don't just happen, there are many factors that lead them to happen. In weather, a Rodzilla snowstorm along I-95 doesn't just happen, it comes together because of a combination of many factors, the most common of which is -NAO, -AO, +PNA, -EPO, Phase 8/1/2/3 MJO, and warmer water temperatures over the central equatorial Pacific than over the eastern equatorial Pacific near Ecuador/Peru. 1/23/16, aka "Jonas" is the classic example, with NYC getting 27.5" of snow.
Now, let's talk Mets baseball. We have seen many times this year the Mets have what should be a comfortable late game lead turn into a nailbiter. 3/30/19, the second game of the year when the Mets played the Nats in DC, the Mets rallied in the top half of the 9th inning for a seven run lead going into the bottom of the 9th only for it to become a save situation and get hold down narrowly. Four days later in Miami on 4/3, the Mets had a seemingly comfortable 9th inning lead of 6-0.....of for the Marlins to not only get the tying run to the plate, but also have the batter representing the tying run hit the ball deep into the outfield only to be caught because of how deep the dimensions of Marlins park are. In some ballparks, that ball would be over the fence and would tie the game. Now, I can go on and on about those types of games the last five months but I'm not sure what the character limit is per post on this forum (okay, likely unlimited but you know where I'm going).
So let's flash forward to yesterday, the Labor Day afternoon game, when the Mets had a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. Well, the Nats got closer and made it 7-3 thanks to the 3-run home run by Asdrubal Cabrera (another former Met who kills the Mets), and they went to Edwin Diaz (who has struggled mightily this year) and was able to get the third out. Once again, the Mets were very fortunate they held on.
So now let's get to tonight. The Mets offense rallies big in the top of the 9th and has, once again, what is theoretically a comfortable 6-run 10-4 lead. But knowing this team, I was not ready to be excited. When the middle of the 9th occurred, I PM'ed someone I know who is also a Mets fan and said "The bullpen needs to hold on to this lead. Whether or not the Nats see Diaz remains to be seen." And that's exactly what happened. And this time, the big lead, which got bent, got broken as Diaz gives up the walk-off 3-run home run.
Of course, the guy I PM'ed is blaming me for the Mets loss. But in fact, I was giving the analytics on how bad the Mets bullpen has been and that it was a serious disaster waiting to happen. And tonight, that disaster happened. Am I upset? I would by lying if I was saying no. But am I surprised? Not in the slightest. While the Mets went on a nice run against bad teams mid-July through early-August, the terrible bullpen was something that could not be ignored. And that is likely the final nail in the coffin to the 2019 Mets season.

Math 23x7, send this excellent post to Calloway.Knowing all this, all he had to do for the best shot of winning was leave Lugo in who had a lights out 8th inning.Calloway and Diaz have sunk the Mets chances this year.

WHAT A GAME! I was at Citifield for the record setting #53! A star is born! Going again tomorrow to see the last game of what should have been a better season. We have a great foundation, just need a few tweaks. LGM!

Alonso is amazing, he beat out Judge which makes me happy,LOL.Anyway, you are right, a few tweaks and we can make a run for the playoffs.Diaz looked much better at the end, Familia as well. There is a great 8th and 9th inning set up.Starting pitching looks good with DeGrom, Matz, Stroman, Wheeler and Syndegaard.Good hitters with Rosario,Conforto, Alonso, McNeil and Nimmo. The additon of Davis was a good one too.
Anyway, looking forward to the playoffs and hoping for a classic Yankee-Dodger World Series going back to the 1955,1956,1976,1977 and 1981 days.

Well, the Mets season may be over, but it was sure fun watching them sweep the f'in Braves! Was at the game again today, and it was just so much fun, made a bunch of friends in the 7 Line Army, drinks all around and a beautiful fall day. It's going to be a long winter.

That will leave Atlanta something to think about all winter! So glad to see Dominic Smith have a great moment. That kid has great hitting potential!Glad you enjoyed it Janet, the most loyal Met Fan I know.Guess we will have to console ourselves tracking the hopefully many snowstorms that come our way this winter.
Now, on to root for the Dodgers beating the Yankees in the World Series!!!!!

Re: 2019 Mets Season
The Mets and Nats in 2019 had some similarities. Both had decent starting pitchers. Mets had deGrom, Wheeler, and Matz. Nats had Scherzer, Strasburg, and Corbin. Both hit a lot of home runs. Both had bad bullpens.
Now the differences:
1) Home run reliance. The Mets, since 2015, have been relying on the home run to drive in runs. The Nats hit a lot of home runs as well but also were able to string together a series of hits time after time.
2) Stolen Bases. The Nats were tied for third in baseball with stolen bases at 116. The Mets had 56 stolen bases, 8th worst in baseball. And on the defensive side. The Mets allowed 139 stolen bases and had a caught stealing percentage of 14%, the worst in MLB. The Nats allowed 86 stolen bases, far fewer than the Mets. And the caught stealing percentage of 22% by them wasn't the best but better than the Mets. I mean take a look at Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard. 42 stolen bases allowed!!! That is an ATROCIOUS amount by a pitcher. And deGrom allowed 24 stolen bases, not as much, but he does deserve a bit of heat for that as well. On the hitting side, Amed Rosario led the Mets with 19 stolen bases. The Nats had two guys with more stolen bases. Trea Turner (35) and Victor Robles (28), It has been awhile since the Mets were a team known for stealing bases.
3) Manager: With great starting pitchers, Nats manager Dave Martinez allowed his starters to go an extra inning if necessary. This took pressure off the shaky bullpen and reduced it's exposure. Mets manager Mickey Callaway, on the other hand, would tend take his starters out prematurely. This lead to the bullpen coming in and blowing games a lot more than from the Nats. Yes, Mickey Callaway was fired (to my delight) but the fact that they passed on both Joe Maddon and Joe Girardi is mind boggling. I wonder if they do have any interest in putting in an intelligent baseball person as a skipper. Maybe not.
Anyway, the 2019 Washington Nationals went on an incredible run to capture it's first championship. Being 29 years old (born in 1990), the Mets are now the only team in the NL East that has not won a championship in my lifetime.
Also, looking to 2020, the Nationals will open up the regular season at Citi Field against the Mets. And the Nats have their home opener one week later....against the Mets. So the Mets will see the Nats raise the championship banner next spring. Sound familiar? It should. Opening night in 2016, the Mets opened up in Kansas city to watch the Royals (whom they lost to in the WS the year before) raise the banner. And opening night in 2007, the Mets opened up in St. Louis to watch the Cardinals (whom they lost to in the NLCS the year before) raise the banner. Seems like the schedule makers know what they're up to.
