If it's ok with Frank and the moderators, I'd like to start this fishing thread here.It does pertain to weather somewhat as those conditions help or harm the fishing.

Yesterday, I took my small bass out to Lake Tiorati in the Seven Lakes Harriman NY area.Used a Gary Yammamoto 5 inch Senko worm, smoke rootbeer/green and copper, worm rigged wacky or Jersey style.I use a 5 foot 3 inch Fenwick medium/light rod with 8 pouind monofilament line.Caught 4 Largemouth Bass and one Pickerel. One of the Largemouths was an absolute beauty, 19 inches/ 5 pounds, the second largest I've caught in 20 years of fishing.Had the drag set just right as he would have broken me off for sure, taking out line. For hjuilarity'sa sake, another of the Largemouths was as big as a sardine, maybe 4 inches,LOL!

Perfect day weatherwise, partly cloudy, cool but the wind kicked up as the day wore on, blowing me around.

Looking forward to fall trout up at the Beaverkill ion Roscoe NY come mid October. The spring was terrible, too much rain with the river murky and high.Only got one trip up there then with only a couple of small ones.

Does crabbing count? Lol... We have caught 21 crabs since Monday...a little slower than other years, pulling up little ones and females with eggs that we have to throw back....

I am glad you are over here now for good Stox to start this thread. Fall Stripped bass will def start to run soon. That is when the big boys will really move through, esp around Montauk. Unfort I was only able to head out once this year. The day I went I caught 7. My old man; however, was the man this year. He caught 98 striped bass on his boat this year; up to 45lbs. Well he and the people he took on his boat combined; all caught on the north shore of LI. He had a day when he caught 22, all keepers (28") all on one tide. I have got to admit I was incredibly jealous, but happy for the old guy. He taught me everything I know. Anyway good luck this fall.

Hey, sroc, great news on the "striper trip of a lifetime" for your Dad.Hope you are able to get a piece of that striper action this fall.Hey, at least you got 7 on the one trip. That's a great day in my book.

I have a buddy with a place right on the beach in Seabright. They are still rebuilding his place after Sandy but I'm sure he'll know when the fall stripers hit there.

Hey sroc, glad to see you. Sounds like your dad had a productive summer. What bait/tackle was he using? I keep getting asked to go out in the Sound with friends but I'm in the midst of starting another company, so time isn't plentiful these days. We've spent a considerable amount of time on the boat joyriding but not much fishing except earlier in the summer. Hopefully I can squeeze in a trip out to The Gut in a few weeks.

Regards,
Nofo

Hey NoFo. The old man would switch it up bait wise. He used diamond jigs, bunker chunks, and drifted eels. It really depended on what they were biting. Neither of us have fished the gut in the recent past, but when we did we used the biggest buck tails we could find with a white pork rind hanging off the hook. As we would drift through the gut up the slope we would strike the rod every time we felt a bump. It was either a bass or the bottom. If no fish we would crank the real about 4-5turn to keep the buck tail about 6 feet or so off the bottom. As the slope came up again...rinse wash repeat. The key though is to strike the rod as soon as, and every time you feel the bump for two reason. First if its not a bass it creates real nice action with the buck tail bouncing up and down as it drifts up the slope which will catch a hungry bass' eye, and two the last thing you want to do is get snagged on the bottom in the gut. It was work, but a pretty deadly method over there. If you do get out again this year good luck. And good luck with the new business. As someone who is actively growing his own business I know how much time and effort that takes.

Hey sroc, yes that is absolutely the way to fish the gut. The difference is we use heavy sinkers on a free line tied out ahead of the bucktail, thereby giving the sinker the opportunity to hit the ledge first. I can't tell you how many rigs I've lost prior to learning that method.
A friend went out this week to just outside Shinnecock Inlet and caught 3 20" fluke on snappers, they also caught some skoolies. Hopefully we can sneak over there soon, that's a shorter ride than the gut.
Thanks for the well wishes, best of luck with your business as well.

Great saltwater info and reports, guys.

On the freshwater front, I went out with my small bass boat to Blue Lake in the Sterling Forest section of Harriman Park.Got 5 Largemouths, 20 inch, 17 1/2 inch, 16 inch and 13 inch.

The 20 incher was at least 5.5 pounds, the biggest I've gotten in 20 years of freshwater fishing. All of the above on a Gary Yammamoto 5 inch Senko worm, smoke, rootbeer green and copper, rigged wacky or Jersey style.I use a 5 foot 3 inch medium-light Fenwick 1 piece rod with 8 pound monofilament test.Lot's of fun with that 20 incher pulling out line all over the place (got the drag just right today).Catching twice as many bass this year rigged wacky with that Senko versus my old way of a purple Creme worm rigged Texas style.

It seems to me the largemouth bass action is a month ahead of schedule this year.It doesn't heat up like this until the end of September.

He stox, we were up in the Catskills over the weekend, caught some large mouth bass and some other fish that I couldn't identify, all on earthworms. They were tiny throwbacks but the kids had a blast.

What's the size limit on those largemouth in NJ? It's 12" in NY. I freshwater fish every couple of years, last time it was ice fishing in Lake Taconic a few years ago.

Nasty east wind out here today. Just for the hell of it, was going to ditch work and try a little porgy fishing this afternoon but the bay is all kicked up.
Spoke with a south fork buddy yesterday (SOFO?) and he said he got his fill of fluke under the Ponquogue bridge for like a week straight but they've since absconded to deeper waters. 75' out by the reef. That's a little bit of a haul from my dock. Still have the annual trip to the Gut in the queue, just waiting for the temps to drop a little bit more. They're getting decent stripers and a ton of blues. Might wait for black fish season then do a combination of drifting the gut and black fishing during the slack. I'll post if and when it happens.

Very nice. They're getting some nice stripers out in the Ocean as well. Some on the drift in Shinnecock Inlet in the evening. Last year (or was it the year before? can't remember) I went on a whim and landed a nice striper off the beach surf casting. I can count the number of times that I've surf-casted in the past 10 years on 1 hand. That was a fun day. We used to surf cast on the Sound every weekend and many weeknights. There wasn't a night that went by that we didn't land keeper bass on eels and sometimes plugs. They since thinned considerably from the Sound beaches by me with the exception of some transient boiling blues. Then the stripers follow and pick up the chum of the bunker or whatever the blues were chasing. Sroc's father had a blast out on his boat earlier this season. I don't know enough about the spots out there anymore, it's been years since I've had a boat on the sound. Occasionally we'll put the Whaler in on the Sound but just for joyriding. Perhaps someday.

Wish I lived closer to the NJ Shore, I'm 1 1/2 hours away.I'd surf cast as much as possible.15 years ago, I got a nice 22 inch striper off a jetty in Lavalette with a gold Acme Kastmaster. That's the only surf striper I ever got.Caught some nice 30-35 inchers on headboats, but the one on a lure in the surf is my favorite.

A buddy of mine had told me the stripers follow a bluefish blitz to pick up the pieces.

We have a place down on the Jersey Shore but I don't think I'll get down there this fall.
Yes, blues love to corner bunker and chum them to pieces. Several years ago, blues chased so many bunker into the rivers and coves out here that the O2 levels dropped and they were killed. Pretty wild stuff:

That's really interesting. My pops btw is still at it. He has his 50th high school reunion this weekend over in Massepequa and him and a couple of his old HS buddies were out at Great Eastern off Montauk yesterday on a charter.  The bastard, just kidding I'm jealous, texted me a picture of a 40lb-er his friend caught while I was hard at work. Not sure what they were using though.

Dunz, I've been living in my house 33 years with huge oak trees all around. The two in the front I think are Red Oaks and they are the ones I use when I make a winter prediction. There is another variety in my back yard producing nothing. Most varities of oaks are dropping acorns very heavily this year.I know from reading what Forstner, a horticulturist, had said.He feels you cannot make any predictions with acorns as they drop off every two years or so.Still, I have had good luck with figuring the amount of snow each winter using them as a gauge.
