I have spoken to my grandfather about this and he remembers this storm very well.  He, and my other grandparents, were in Brooklyn then between the ages of 19 and 24.  To put this into perspective, I'm 24 now Laughing

Do you have the two volume book set by Paul Kocin and Louis Uccellini from 2004 entitled "Northeast Snowstorms"?  They include historic storms with pictures of the storm along with a map of snow totals, a surface map sequence, and a sequence of maps of 500 mb heights and vorticity with 400 mb winds.  In the description, they showed the weather forecast from the evening of December 25th, the night before the storm and it stated that for the 26th there would be overcast with snow from time to time during the afternoon tapering off by the evening. Before you know it their forecast dramatically changed!  The Boxing Day 2010 blizzard had elements of this storm in terms of the forecast but at least we knew 18-24 hours before the storm hit that a "Godzilla", in some cases a "Roid-zilla" would impact the region.

I must get that two volume set!

I guess we can give them a pass in 1947 for completely blowing the forecast without any of the sophisticated radars and water vapor loops we have today. Most people did not even have a tv set in 1947 either so it was radio or newspaper forecasts back then.My dad was 29 and Mom was 27.Those folks who experienced that will never forget it!
